At the same time, we have Heinrich Klein’s personal diary, the German engineer who led the 1934 rescue expedition. This document offers a unique perspective from the rescuers’ side, detailing the challenges, dangers, and decisions they faced in the inhospitable Chocó jungle.
3. “Unplanned Adventure: An Autobiographical Account of the 1934 Airplane Crash and 29 day Colombian Jungle Survival of Newton C. Marshall, Mining Engineer”
This extraordinary autobiographical manuscript, housed at the Glen Ridge (NJ) Public Library and in the archives of the Glen Ridge Historical Society (maintained by Sally Meyer, Borough Historian), narrates in first person Marshall’s 29 days of survival in the jungle after the Sikorsky aircraft crash..
